The growth of the submersible pump for sewage pumping since then has been dramatic, as a growing number of specifiers and developers have learned its benefits.

There are three types of sewage pumps:

Smaller sewage pumps, used in light domestic and commercial applications, typically handle up to 55 millimeters (2.2 inches) of spherical solids and range from 0.75 to 2.2 kilowatts (1.01 to 2.95 horsepower ).

Larger sewage pumps handle 65 millimeters (2.6 inches) and larger solids and typically have a minimum of 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) of discharge. They are generally used in municipal and industrial applications for pumping wastewater and all types of industrial wastewater.

Submersible shock pumps, which are used to handle large concentrations of solids and / or solids more resistant than conventional wastewater pumps can not handle. Chopper pumps are generally used in municipal and industrial wastewater applications and provide plug free operation by macerating solids that could clog other types of submersible pumps.

Submersible pumps are normally used in a packaged pumping station where gravity drainage is not possible.

A feed water pump also called a boiler feed pump is a special type of pump which is used to pump water into a steam boiler. The water may be freshly supplied or returning condensate produced as a result of the condensation of the steam produced by the tank boiler. These pumps are high pressure units that take suction from a condensate return system and can be of the centrifugal pump type or positive displacement type.

The design of boiler feed pumps regarding power input, material, type of pump and drive is largely governed by the developments which have taken place in power station technology. The trend in fossil-fuelled power stations is towards larger and larger power station units (> 1000 MW in 2011). This has led to boiler feed pumps with a drive rating of 30 - 50 MW.

Until 1950, the average pressure in the outlet cross-section of the pump (discharge pressure of the feed pump) was in the 200 bar region. By 1955 the average discharge pressure had risen to 400 bar. The mass flow rates were in the region of 350 tonnes/h in 1950, compared to 3200 tonnes/h (in some exceptions up to 4000 tonnes/h) today. Boiler feed pumps operate at fluid temperatures of 160 to 210 ºC. In exceptional cases the temperature of the fluid handled may be higher still.

Feed pumps for 1600 MW nuclear power stations are constructed for mass flow rates of up to 4000 tonnes/h and feed pump discharge pressures of 70 to 100 bar.
